“Landscape habitats and Ecosystem Services mapping for landscape management”
Online | DECEMBER, 9th 2020
OBJECTIVES
AUDIENCE
Based on ALICE advances and outcomes, the objective of the one-day Winter school is to provide insights and tools for landscape characterisation, from habitats mapping, connectivity to ecosystem services assessment. The Winter school will be virtual, based on practical examples, being replicable to any other case study.
The target audience are young or senior scientists interested in the Land Change Science methods.
Attendants should have some basic skills in GIS (QGis, ArcGis) and R softwares.
PROGRAMME
9.00-9.30 am Introduction on Land cover mapping and dynamics (T. Houet – CNRS France)
ALICE philosophy, in line with the Land Change Science, will be introduced to better understand links between land cover maps, habitats and landscape connectivity mapping, and ecosystems services. Basics on land cover mapping using remote sensing and freely available datasets will be present, as an input for any of the following tutorials.
9.30-12.00 am Tutorial 1: Habitat mapping using remote sensing and in situ data (J.M. Alvarez – IHC Spain)
A current challenge of biodiversity and conservation is the estimation of the spatial extent of habitat types across broad territories. In the absence of fine-resolution maps, predictive modelling helps in assessing the spatial distribution of vegetation types. A framework for mapping the area of occupancy (AOO) of habitat types will be presented, using a combination of remote sensing based modelling and in situ vegetation surveys for ALICE case studies.
1.30-3.00 pm Tutorial 2: Landscape connectivity using CHLOE software (H. Boussard – INRAe France)
Landscape composition and configuration greatly affect biodiversity throughout the connectivity of landscape features. CHLOE_LandscapeMetrics allows the provisioning of multiscale landscape analyses such as landscape connectivity within a user-friendly framework under QGis.
3.00-5.00 pm Tutorial 3: Ecosystem Services assessment using k.LAB (Stefano Balbi – BC3)
This tutorial will introduce the participants to the k.LAB technology powering the ARIES (ARtificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services) project, which redefines ecosystem service assessment and valuation for decision-making. The ARIES approach to mapping natural capital, natural processes, human beneficiaries, and service flows to society is a powerful new way to visualise, value, and manage the ecosystems on which the human economy and well-being depend.
5.00-5.30 pm Conclusions: future directions (T. Houet – CNRS France)
Winter school is supported by:
ALICE partners, the French PAYOTE network (https://reseau-payote.fr/), OSUR (https://osur.univ-rennes1.fr/) and the IALE Spanish community.
